Best SEO tools for UK small businesses

By the Grow & Guard editorial team · Last updated · 8 min read

Most small businesses can do a lot of SEO with free tools. Paid suites such as Semrush become worth it when you are actively creating content or competing in crowded markets. Here is the toolkit we suggest, in the order to set it up.

Quick answer

  • Start free: Google Search Console, Google Business Profile and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Free site audit and backlinks: Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites you own.
  • Best paid all-in-one: Semrush. Keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking and audits, with a free account to try it.

The free essentials

Google Search Console

Search Console shows which searches your site appears for, how often people click, which pages are indexed and any problems Google finds. It is free and it is the single most useful SEO tool for a small business. Verify your domain, submit your sitemap and check it monthly.

Google Business Profile

If you serve customers locally, your Business Profile drives the map results for "near me" searches. Keep your categories, opening hours, services and photos up to date, and reply to reviews.

Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing's equivalent of Search Console. Bing's index also powers other search and AI answer services, and you can import your settings from Search Console in a few clicks.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools

Ahrefs offers free tools for site owners, including a site audit and backlink data for websites you verify. It is a good way to find broken links and technical issues without paying for a full suite. We do not have a commercial relationship with Ahrefs.

When to pay for an SEO tool

A paid tool earns its keep when you are doing at least one of these regularly:

  • Researching keywords for new pages or blog posts
  • Tracking rankings for a set of important searches
  • Studying what competitors rank for and who links to them
  • Auditing a larger site for technical problems

Top pick

1 Semrush: best paid all-in-one

It covers keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, site audits, backlink analysis and content tools, and it has plans aimed at freelancers and small businesses. You can start with a free account that gives limited access, and paid plans come with a free trial. Prices on Semrush's site are shown in US dollars, so the pound cost will vary with exchange rates.
