Cookie policy

Last updated

Short version: we do not set advertising, analytics or tracking cookies, so you will not see a cookie banner here.

Cookies we use

None for analytics, advertising or personalisation. Our visitor statistics come from Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies or local storage.

Strictly necessary security cookies

Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, may set a strictly necessary cookie (for example cf_clearance) if it needs to check that a visitor is not an automated bot, such as during an attack. These cookies are used only for security and do not need consent under UK rules.

Cookies on other websites

When you click a link to another website, including links marked Ad, that website and any affiliate network it uses may set its own cookies once you arrive. Those cookies are controlled by them, and their cookie policies apply. You can manage or block cookies in your browser settings.

If this changes

If we ever add cookies that are not strictly necessary, we will ask for your consent first, with rejecting as easy as accepting, and update this page.

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files that a website saves in your browser. Some are needed for a site to work securely; others are used to remember preferences, measure visits or show targeted adverts. Similar technologies include local storage and tracking pixels. Under the UK's Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), sites must ask for consent before using cookies that are not strictly necessary.

How we measure visits without cookies

Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views using information sent with each request, such as the page address, referring site, browser type and country, without setting cookies, using local storage or building a profile of you across sites. We use it only to see which guides are useful so we can keep them up to date.

Links marked Ad go first to a short redirect on our own site, then to the provider's website. We do not set a cookie when you click. The provider or its affiliate network may then use a cookie on its own site to record that you arrived from us, which is how we may earn a commission. You can block third-party cookies in your browser without affecting how our site works.
